Claire Lilley

Biography

After completing her British Horse Society exams, Claire received extensive training in Germany, firstly with Herr HH Meyer zu Strohen at the State riding school in Verden, then as a Bereiter at Reitverein Oberwesterwald under the instruction of Jurgen Ducker. She learnt to ride advanced level dressage, and jumped Grade A show jumpers. During her time there she taught vaulting, Quadrille riding, show jumping, and dressage and trained many young horses for competition as well as remedial work with problem horses.

She attended Business College in Cologne, mastering the German language in the process. After breaking her back in a jumping accident, which forced her to give up jumping, Claire’s main interest became dressage.

On returning to England, she spent some time running a large livery yard, before accepting a post as Chief Instructor and Yard Manager at Orchard Cottage Riding School, Surrey attaining Riding School of the Year, awarded by Horse and Rider Magazine during her time there. Claire then went on to running own training yard, taking in horses for remedial training, breaking in young stock, teaching students and competing in dressage on own youngsters. Freelance teaching became a big part of her life and she began writing for equestrian magazines. She participated in riding demonstrations throughout the UK riding for her trainer, Sylvia Loch and appearing in the ‘Classical Seat’ videos.

She has progressed to international freelance teaching, now running regular training courses in Sweden as well as the UK, specializing in competition and remedial training for all disciplines. Claire has had a comprehensive career spanning nearly twenty years. She competes on her own horses in dressage at advanced level, specializing in dressage to music. She has written her first book ’Schooling with Ground Poles’, and is a regular contributor to Your Horse magazine. She holds riding demonstrations and clinics throughout the UK.
