Riding Safely on the Road

Riding on the roads can be one of the most hazardous horse related activities and most of these accidents could be avoidable if riders and drivers followed some simple rules.

There are several sources of information which can help your knowledge of road safety, such as:

Many County Councils are now becoming actively involved in promoting equestrian safety.  Contact your local Road Safety Officers to see if they organise Riding and Road Safety training and any other help or support they can offer. 

A BHS/DETR booklet is available called “Horse Sense for Motorists”.  

The BHS and the Association of British Riding Schools register equestrian centres only if they fulfil a number of safety requirements.

The BHS Riding and Road Safety Test helps to educate riders in road safety.  Call the BHS Safety Department on 01926 707700.
