The Emergency Euthanasia of Horses

Homeopathic Help with Grieving

Don't forget to make provisions for your horse if anything happens to you. The wording of your will is vital if you want to guarantee that your intent is carried out.

As of 1 May 2003, new EU Legislation is in force in the UK that will affect everyone who owns livestock. The Animal By-Products Regulation 2003 bans the burial of carcasses and states that once an old or sick animal has been put down, the owner must dispose of the carcass 'without undue delay'. The only exemptions to the ban are animals in remote areas of the UK - recognised by DEFRA as the Highlands and Islands of Scotland - and animals classified as pets. The pet exclusion, however, will not be a get-out clause for owners of tame animals, such as lambs, chickens, ponies or pot-bellied pigs. The regulation classifies a 'pet' as a species normally nourished and kept by humans, and includes domestic or companion animals, such as dogs, cats, gerbils or budgerigars.

Methods of Euthanasia

There are two methods of euthanasia - lethal injection or gunshot. With the first, a horse is usually sedated before a lethal dose of a barbiturate anaesthetic is injected by a vet.

The gunshot method is done by a vet, trained knackerman or hunt kennel man only. This is obviously a job for a highly trained individual, as the shot needs to be directed in exactly the right place - roughly halfway between the eye and ear in the middle of the face. Check how your 'expert' plans to carry out the procedure - beware of a knackerman who uses a captive bolt (which may only knock the animal unconscious and is usually only used in special circumstances, such as on a plane) rather than a free bullet.

lf you have land you may be able to bury your horse at home, but this is restricted by law. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA, tel: 0845 9335577) will provide more information and you need to inform your Local Authority Environmental Health Department and the Environment Agency (tel: 01454 624400).

Below is a list of companies in the UK that will help you when you have to make the decision that all horse owners dread.
