Making Allowances by Richie Phillips |
|
What possesses someone to pursue something that nearly kills him? What happens when that person is your father? I spent a large part of my adolescence battling with these very questions; trying to understand his desire to make his mark as a jockey, and fighting to live a normal existence, in the face of the danger, heartbreak and hardship that this undying obsession brought. Dreams are special treasures; they are among those things we value most of all, but they cost nothing. Yet, making these dreams come true can cost much more than money alone. How much would you be willing to pay?
To watch someone you love slowly destroying themselves is the second hardest thing in the world to do. There is something else, something much harder. Finding yourself in control of their dreams, with the power to grant or deny that dream, is a heavier burden to bear, particularly when you realise the wrong decision could destroy them.
Even when looking to the past, to make sense of the future, not all answers readily present themselves. There is a far greater force that demands to play its part in all affairs of the family and the heart; that force is fate.
“Making
Allowances” is a tough look at a tough sport; National Hunt Racing, “The
Sport of Kings”, on a beer and fags budget. You will laugh, you will cry, you
will be disappointed, you will be delighted.
