Description: Shrubs or trees with alternate lobed
leaves; fruit is an acorn.
Symptoms
may include: Constipation,
and blood stained faeces, refusal to drink, depression, flatulence, loss
of appetite, weakness and staggering,
irregular and slow heart beat, pale mucus membrane and watery eyes. He
kidneys can be damaged in extreme cases.
Notes: Reports
of horses eating acorns with little effect, but fatalities have occurred
after ingestion of acorns and other parts of the tree. Reports of
poisoning are common in the spring when buds and young leaves may be
eaten and in autumn when acorns are more abundant. if eaten, leaves and the
acorns can cause "addiction" in the horse.
