Fencing for Paddocks

Fencing for horses should be safe and secure. Below are different types of fencing and the pros and cons.

BARBED WIRE - should never be used around horses. It tends to sag and rust.

ELECTRIC FENCING - Versatile and low priced. Can be used in addition to existing fencing (i.e. on wooden post & rail to stop chewing) or on it's own.  It is better to use wide tape that is easily seen by horses. Electric fencing is a useful way to separate horses and also to divide grazing land.

HEDGES - When properly maintained to keep them thick and in good condition, they are ideal as they are safe and provide a windbreak.

PLASTIC FENCING - Maintenance free, smart, safe  and strong.  Tends to be more expensive than electric fencing.

PLAIN WIRE - is best used when it has three strands together with strong wooden posts.

SHEEP NETTING (also PIG netting and CHICKEN WIRE) - should be avoided as horses can get their hooves caught.

STONE WALLS - In good condition are ideal.

WOODEN POST & RAILS - Regular maintenance is required to prevent rotting and splintering.  Some types of wood are more apt to splinter than others (Chestnut Paling).

Chestnut fencing is made from cleft chestnut pales that are unsuitable for equine use. Click on picture to enlarge:

Field Safety:

Consider the type of fencing being used and choose the best that your finances will allow.  Putting an electric wire across the top can stop any wood chewing or leaning by the horses.

Gates need to be safe, try to avoid putting them in a corner, this will help prevent accidents and poaching of the ground.  Gates should hang level and swing easily.

Fill in any holes in the field, remove any large stones and level out any bumps.
