Policy Check List:
When assessing market value, does the company
go by age, breed, bloodline or ability?
Does the horse need a vet's
certificate?
Does the premium include
premium tax (5%).
Is there an extra charge for
paying premiums monthly?
What is the
excess/co-insurance on claims for vet's fees (is there a time limit on cover
for vet's fees), loss of use and saddlery (check rugs are covered)?
When does the cover start
from?
Does the vet's fees cover per
incident, per claim or in total over a year?
Is alternative e.g.
physiotherapy treatment covered?
What percentage is the loss of
use cover?
Does loss of use vary if the
horse is kept rather than destroyed?
Find out what sort of documents you will need to supply if
planning a change to the policy in the future - for example increased value.
Check that you have the correct "class of use" cover for
your horse.
Check whether or not your insurance company will accept fax
copies of information.
Find out what sort of security is required for saddlery and
tack cover (make sure that you keep your receipts!).
Check the amount of the excess on the policy.
Ask the insurance company if it has a sister or mother
company - some companies may be subsidiaries of companies you might have had
bad experiences with.
How does the company make up its claim panel?
If you need advice on what to do if you are unhappy
with the way your claim has been dealt with, contact:
