"Horse sense on the net: Husband and wife team Liz and Richard Stevens are proving that internet businesses can pay their way. Horsedata.co.uk and it's associated online shop show how bright ideas can become shining money spinners with a bit of technical know-how. When the couple moved to Elham from Chislehurst two years ago, they set about housing and equipping their horses. "It took us ages to find stuff and there was nowhere we could get everything" said Richard. "So the business started from there." "We just jumped in at the deep end." added Liz. "Things we do now as a matter of course, such as database queries, we didn't have a clue how to do." Now the site, run from their home, attracts 1,500 visitors a day, offering detailed searches on any horsey topic, from livery yards to saddlers. "We also offer a free personal search," said Liz. "If you can't find it, we'll help." As an example of the internet's global reach, their first search was for a livery yard in Wisconsin, USA. "It amazes us the amount of time and money some internet businesses take to set up." said Richard. "In tota, this probably cost us about three to four thousand pounds." Sales from the shop are growing exponentially while advertisers and firms wanting to add their names to the site are beating a path to the Stevens' door. In the days of the internet boom the Stevens's thought that advertising would be the moneyspinner. As it turned out, the shop, set up in May, has proved vital to the business. "Internet shopping is the way forward, because it's so easy."said Liz. The variety of goods on the site attracts customers - disproportionate amount of them male. "Only 20% of riders in the UK are men." sais Richard. "So getting decent, colourful clothing is difficult, unless you log on." As well as the site, Liz takes care of the couple's five horses, ranging from a 2-year-old to one aged 14. Log on to www.horsedata.co.uk for searches and www.horsedata.biz to get everything but the saddle for your horse."

NEW FREE WEBSITE FACILITY IS PROVING A BIG HIT

FLEDGLING WEBSITE TO TAKE OVER GEEGEES.CO.UK

NEW FREE WEBSITE FACILITY IS PROVING A BIG HIT  - 28 March 2001

In fact it’s generating a multitude of hits.  However comprehensive the information on a website, it can never satisfy all of the people all of the time.  That was the thinking behind the “Personal Search Facility” on HorseData.co.uk, a site operated by Liz and Richard Stevens from their stable in Elham, Kent.

Among the most comprehensive sites on the web, it’s not just the breadth and depth of information that is making it so popular.  “Such is the equine world’s seemingly limitless thirst for information”, says Liz, “that we found it necessary to provide a free service whereby if you want to know about anything equine, we’ll respond within 48 hours”.

They are receiving requests from all over the world, most fairly routine, some totally obscure data, but they haven’t been stumped yet.

FLEDGLING WEBSITE TO TAKE OVER GEEGEES.CO.UK - 5 June 2001

The poll of web site users organised by GeeGees to decide who should take over its web site has been won by HorseData.co.uk, which gained three times as many votes as its nearest rival.

The result confirms the growing popularity of the site, established only four months ago, but already described by a number of search engines as “a massive database”.  HorseData provides over 10,000 items of information, and the number is growing by the month.

According to one voter, now a regular user, “The information is all there on the site, it doesn’t just refer you to another site to find it.  It has saved me a lot of time and trouble”.
