MANES

Keeping the driving bridle in place:
When the bridle is on, take a few hairs from just behind the head band, and a few hairs from in front of the head band. do a small plait with the hair, behind the head band. this will keep the bridle in one place and stop it from moving!

Chelsea 4 May 2004

Use hair gel to keep stray bit of hair in place when plaiting ( don't let the gel fall onto the coat).

Use a dressmaker's stitch unpicker rather than scissors to remove plaits.

A cheap and easy way to achieve the perfect plait is to apply egg white to the mane to stop any split ends from sticking out.

Pull the hair when the horse is warm from exercise so that the hair comes out easily.

Pull a few hairs at a time and over several days.

Always pull hair from underneath or it will stick up as it grows back.

How To Plait A Mane

Tricks of the Trade: plaiting (including making your won false plaits)

TAILS

Hair gel combed through the tails and manes of mountain and moorland breeds helps the hair to stay in place after washing.

Wear a pair of thin surgical gloves or disposable vinyl gloves to make tail pulling easier.

Pull the hair when the horse is warm from exercise so that the hair comes out easily.

Take only a few hairs from each side of the tail to avoid bald patches.

Don't pull too much hair from the centre top of the tail or it will go bushy.

Stand on a bale of straw to one side of the horse to avoid any potential kicks.

Keep tail plaits tight as you work, especially at the top.

Take only a few hairs from each side every time you pass the side sections over the centre one or the plait will become too thick.

Plait down the tail until you are about two thirds of the way down the dock and are using the long centre tail hairs, then plait only these to the end.

Be very careful when applying a tail bandage on top of your plait.

Quarter Marking

Apply hair gel prior to quarter marking to help keep the hair in place.

Spray the quarter marks with hair spray afterwards to keep the hair in place.
