Weeds can be controlled by pulling and spraying.
Spot spraying can be done, this is cheaper and can be more
effective. A contractor can be hired to spray everything.
There are selective weed killers on the market that attack
broad-leaved plants such as docks or thistles but will not harm grass.
Systemic weed killers will kill anything including grass
and there will be a small amount of leakage even from a knapsack sprayer.
When spraying choose a mild and windless day with no rain
expected for a specified number of hours (read the product information for
details).
Spray all fields at the same time if possible to avoid
cross contamination.
Some weeds such as docks, thistles and nettles can be
controlled by topping (cutting) with tractor mounted machinery or by
hand. Be careful not to top Ragwort as the
dead plant is palatable to horses and is highly poisonous. Small
amounts of Ragwort can be pulled and then burnt. It may be easier
to use a weed killer such as Barrier H for large quantities.
Weed killers such as Garlon 2 and Dow Elanco can be used
kill nettles, docks, brambles and gorse. Apply these weed killers whilst the
plants are growing but before any flowering.
Check any restrictions on using weed killer products as
they may only be suitable for established pasture.
The most common economical and effective method of controlling Ragwort
is by a timely application of a suitable selective herbicide. 2,4-D (Headland
Staff) is most commonly used in established leys and permanent pastures. Applied
at the correct dose rate and critical timing, complete season long control can
be achieved. Restrictions on grazing and conservation after spraying must be
adhered to in order to prevent poisoning of stock with the dying and dead
Ragwort foliage.
Barrier H Ragwort Control Control Ragwort now with Barrier H. During
the Autumn and Winter, the grasses die back exposing the rosettes and seedlings
which will be next years problem. If you use Barrier H now, you will not have to
waste product on the larger taller growth next summer.
